I got this to replace my old FTM 2005 version. But I discovered after I got it that as of 2017 it no longer works with Ancestry.com for sharing and editing online genealogies. So, this was a waste of money for me in 2018. If you want to export your genealogy from Family Tree Maker to ancestry.com, you will need the 2017 version. Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014
Software MacKiev's first release of Family Tree Maker, Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014, was all about getting the former Ancestry.com product to market again.Released more than a year ago, on 2016 March 1, three months after Ancestry.com stopped selling it, the Software MacKiev release was largely the same product with a different owner; the most notable change was a new icon.Although they it released in 2016, Software MacKiev did not call it Family Tree Maker 2017,they wisely highlighted the continuation and tempered expectations by continuing to call it Family Tree Tree Maker 2014.Software MacKiev does like to refer to their release as Family Tree Maker 2014.1, and I dislike that.I call it Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 8, because that is what it really is.

Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 GEDCOM
Software MacKiev did make some improvements before reintroducing Family Tree Maker to the market, and one of these improvements is a valid GEDCOM header.
Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 do not produce valid GEDCOM files, the ostensible GEDCOM files these products produce do not even start with valid GEDCOM header. In fact, the Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker GEDCOM header does not even include a valid Family Tree Maker version number..
Software MacKiev took Ancestry's product and my criticism and fixed it;Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 is the first ever release of New Family Tree Maker to produce a valid GEDCOM header.

Ancestry.com & Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker GEDCOM Header discusses the Ancestry.com errors and Software MacKiev fixes in detail, including the use of a made-up name for the submitter record, so it is a bit disappointing that Software MacKiev did not fix that detail.
The most significant criticism of the Family Tree Maker 2017 GEDCOM header is that it still uses the old address structure, which uses
ADDR
followed by CONT
lines, instead of the one introduced with GEDCOM 5.5, which uses ADR1
, ADR2
and ADR3
.That is not just about providing a more structured address, it is also about keeping CONC
and CONT
out of the GEDCOM header,to keep parsing the GEDCOM header as simple as possible.Family Tree Maker 2017 GEDCOM: UTF-8 only
Software MacKiev released Family Tree Maker 2017 SP1 (23.1) about a week ago,and the only thing different about the GEDCOM header it produces is the version number.
The Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 GEDCOM header also contains a valid Family Tree Maker versions number, and defaults the destination (
HEAD.DEST
) to the source (HEAD.SOUR
) instead of some invalid made-up value.Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 uses GEDCOM version 5.5.1, states so correctly (unlike some other products, including previous versions of Family Tree Maker, see Truncated GEDCOM Version), defaults the encoding to UTF-8, and the UTF-8 GEDCOM files it produces start with a Byte Order Mark (BOM) like they should.Family Tree Maker 2017, released mid 2017, continues to do all these things right, and goes one step further; The Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2017 GEDCOM export does not merely default to UTF-8 encoding, the Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2017 GEDCOM export simply uses UTF-8 always; you can no longer choose any any other encoding.
UTF-8 only
The first release of New Family Tree Maker is Family Tree Maker 2008 released back in 2007, also supports just just one encoding. The only GEDCOM encoding Family Tree Maker 2014 supports is Windows ANSI, and that is an illegal one.
GEDCOM 5.5.1 allows four encodings: ASCII, ANSEL, UTF-8 and UTF-16 (misnamed

UNICODE
as if UTF-8 isn't Unicode) and the Family Tree Maker 2008 GEDCOM export does not support a single one of them.Ancestry.com's FTM 2008 supports export to ANSI only. The release of FTM 2009 in 2008 did not fix that. The release of FTM 2011 in 2010 still did not fix that.
Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2012 introduced the GEDCOM export choices that Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 still features;once you choose to export to GEDCOM, you get a choice of three encodings: ANSI, ASCII and UTF-8.

A Unicode genealogy application should export UTF-8 GEDCOM files, and that is exactly what Family Tree Maker 2017 does.
Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2017 does away with that choice.Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2017 does not merely default the encoding of GEDCOM files to UTF-8, Family Tree Maker 2017 does not give you a choice any more, Family Tree Maker 2017 always uses UTF-8 for GEDCOM files. This limitation is a Good Thing.RootsMagic GEDCOM files have been UTF-8 only for years now, and I agree with that practice. The problem with the other choices Family Tree Maker 2014 still offered is that they may lose information because they do not support all the characters you used in your database.By no longer offering choices that may lose your information, RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker protect you from making a choice that may lose some of your data, and offers no benefits anyway.
Unicode genealogy applications should export to UTF-8, legacy genealogy applications should export to ANSEL.A Unicode genealogy application should be able to import ASCII, ANSEL GEDCOM files, but should not produce ASCII or ANSEL GEDCOM files, and certainly not perpetuate character encoding problems by producing ANSI GEDCOM files.A Unicode genealogy application should export UTF-8 GEDCOM files, and that is exactly what Family Tree Maker 2017 does.
GEDCOM supports UTF-16 since GEDCOM 5.3 back in 1993.There is no pressing need to support export to UTF-16 GEDCOM files, as UTF-8 is just as capable as UTF-16, but it is convenient if your genealogy software imports UTF-16 GEDCOM files.Personal Ancestral File (PAF) 5 can export to UTF-16 and Family Historian 6 uses an UTF-16 GEDCOM as its native database format.A quick test with an UTF-16 GEDCOM file created by PAF confirmed that Family Tree Maker 2017 will import UTF-16 GEDCOM files.Another quick test confirmed that it will import ANSEL GEDCOM files too. Family Tree Maker 2014 still outputs trailing white space, the officially illegal and worst possible choice.Family Tree Maker 2017 avoids both leading and trailing white space, the best possible choice.
CONC
GEDCOM allows lines of at most 255 characters. Well, 255 code units really, and that's including the mandatory line terminator (see GEDCOM Lines for a detailed discussion).
Family Tree Maker breaks long values at 70 characters, presumably to ensure that the entire line remains below 80 characters, the character width of a traditional monitor and a typical DOS Box, and that is fine.
The problem with Family Tree Maker 2008 through Family Tree Maker 2014 is that simply break the line value after the 70th character, regardless of what character that is.As a result, the last character of the line value may be a space, and that is not so fine, that is officially illegal; GEDCOM does not allow trailing spaces.

Now, it is true, as explained by GEDCOM CONC and CONT, that trailing white space should not be illegal because it cannot always be avoided, and that GEDCOM readers should accept trailing white space, but it remains wise to avoid trailing white space. It is better to use leading white space, and best to avoid both.
Family Tree Maker 2014 still outputs trailing white space, the officially illegal and worst possible choice.Family Tree Maker 2017 avoids both leading and trailing white space, the best possible choice.
This is legal Winsip.
These three GEDCOM fragments illustrate the issue, using ␠ (Symbol for Space) to highlight the relevant space characters. The first one shows FTM 2014 output, the second one shows output that would be OK, the third one shows FTM 2017 output. The Family Tree Maker output has been modified to use ␠ (U+24240, Symbol for Space) instead of the relevant space characters.
Trailing spaces are problematic; they may be lost in manual editing, during file transfer and on GEDCOM import.Family Tree Maker's use of trailing spaces has been a source of import problems for many users problems, yet Ancestry.com never bothered to fix it.
The second code example shows how easy it is to fix the problem; just break the line value before instead of after the space. The result is that the
CONC
line that follows has a line value that starts with a space, and that is as intended. However, it is easy to see how a less than perfect GEDCOM reader might mistakenly skip that space,so the best approach is to avoid both trailing and leading spaces by always breaking line values in the middle of words - and that is what is Family Tree Maker 2017 does.![Coupon Coupon](https://genealogytools.com/wp-content/uploads/image-15.png)
The ALIA
record type is not obsolete, but something unexpected: a record type for which the real world usage is completely different from the specification.
ALIA names
GEDCOM files may contain
INDI.ALIA
records. Its value must be an XREF:INI
, a reference to another INDI
record, but many versions of Family Tree Maker use it for alternate names,as this Family Tree Maker 2012 fragment illustrates:FTM 2012 (21.0.0.723) GEDCOM fragment Slicethepie bot.
This has been cause for complaints, and many a blog post or bulletin board post blames Family Tree Maker for not following the standard.Family Tree Maker does deserves to be blamed for not using multiple

ALIA
record for alternate names, and in GEDCOM 5.0 they created a new record type, for creating a link to another, possible duplicate INDI
record, and rather irresponsibly decided to use the ALIA
tag for that, while it was still in widespread use for alternate names. The reality today, more than a quarter century since GEDCOM 5.0 (1991), is that the
ALIA
record is still widely used for alternate names, while not a single genealogy application uses it for linking one INDI
record to another.GEDCOM ALIA discusses the issue in some depth, and provides best practice.Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2017 follows these best practices. In fact, Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 already uses multiple

nick names
Family Tree Maker's name support needs a bit more attention anyway.Even the very latest version, Family Tree Maker 2017 SP1 (23.1), still doesn't support nick namesWhen you import a GEDCOM file containing
NICK
record, Family Tree Maker will import that as yet another Also Known Asname. That's arguably better than not importing the nick name at all, but it is not correct.Family Tree Maker should support nick names.
summary
The Family Tree Maker 2017 GEDCOM header is near-perfect; the only complaint is the use of an old-style address.
Family Tree Maker 2017 no longer allows the user to choose the encoding for GEDCOM files, but uses UTF-8 always, and that is a Good Thing.Family Tree Maker will still import GEDCOM files that use other encodings, including ANSEL and UTF-16 GEDCOM files.
